Be Inspired {Moments}

February 26, 2010

We’re not ready for kids. We talk about it all the time and laugh about the fact that there really never is a “good time” for kids. But we know, someday, we’ll add tiny humans to our little hubby/wife/2 maltese family:) But until then, I will live in these moments I get to experience behind the lens. The moments I see in other families in the park, outside their home, in the living room, on little facebook videos (thanks Amanda H and Ali K for always posting!) tug at me and make me smile and say “keep doing that, she’s laughing and it’s just perfect!” at a shoot with a family.

I can tell, and hear all the time there is nothing like the connection between mommy and baby. NOTHING like it. And I LOVE being there to see it myself.

My best description for the Morrison’s early December shoot: Crayola. Feels like a box of markers. Or maybe some spilled paint. And I love it. I just wish we had thrown in a teal bike or something to give it one more color ;) Have I made my point yet? When we shoot your session, wear some COLOR!!!! I think it’s been a while since I haven’t found some way to brighten up a shoot. I can’t get enough of it. I promise you’ll be much happier with the photos, too. And if you need a little help, I have a FABULOUS wardrobe stylist. She’ll either pick it out or talk you through it. I mean, she can literally go to your home and outfit your entire family with items you would have never thought to put together. Let me know if you want more info about it.

PS – I’m pretty sure people PAY to get hair as amazing as little Eliana (the precious red-ish head)

I don’t remember WHY Matt was making this face but he’s hilarious so I’m going to assume he just said something ridiculous and thought he made a funny :) Beth rolls with it.

Baby Opal {Lifestyle Newborn}

February 23, 2010

I know I’m getting out of order by posting this recent shoot before some of the Oct/Nov/Dec/Jan sessions I’m still wrapping up, but I really wanted to post this one! I finished edits for the Drake family today and couldn’t get over how adorable little Opal is:) These a a few faves:

The hat was made by a friend of Keri’s. It’s a cupcake!

OH! Loved this. Lucy, partially pictured above, wanted to run her own little photoshoot. Completely adorable. So after i took a few pics, she slid into, had the family squeeze together and she snapped shots on her Nintendo DS (i think that’s what it was?) She was taking forever because she wanted to draw hearts or stars or sparkles or something around their faces…and Keri and Jeff wanted to know if they could stop posing for her:

“are you done Lucy? Lucy? Uh Lucy?”

“Hang on mom, i’m putting sparkles”.

Too cute.

This fall, I was so excited to get a call from the Drake family! I used to work with Keri at sbc advertising in Columbus. She was about two months-ish away from delivering little Opal (in the next post after this one) and wanted to get some fun family shots. So we set up a lifestyle session at the Park of Roses in Clintonville. The light was beautiful and Keri and Lucy rocked out some amazing colors. I was so SO excited when they showed up decked out in all their brightness.

Here are some faves:

Charlotte {Lifestyle Baby}

February 22, 2010

This session, from this fall, is a great example of a lifestyle shoot at it’s best. Charlotte, in her own home, at the time of day when the light in the playroom was the best, very comfortable with her own toys and space. When the kids are happy, they show it. Playing with everything they own, giggling, inviting parents to join it, getting creative. It was so fun and so special for her parents to have this adorable time in her life documents. I shot most of the session on my 50 1.2, but swapped in the 24-70 2.8 several times. The 24-70 seems to be a little less intrusive and depending on how the kids handle you being nearby, that can contribute to your lens selection.

Pouty McPouty-pants

February 18, 2010

Sometimes work is insanely busy. And sometimes my sleep sched gets a little outta wack. And it’s hilarious because Milo refuses to leave the room if I’m working. Matt tries to put him in the bedroom if I’m pulling a late one and Milo scoots right back to my side. It’s cute. But the other night I wouldn’t let him sleep on my lap while I worked (his breathing pattern and how his back bumps my elbow can drive me insane when I’m tired), so he pouted on the couch in a pile of pillows. My camera was out and I cheerfully snapped a pic. It was adorable.

Be Inspired {Light}

February 18, 2010

A new, ongoing category you’ll be seeing is “Be Inspired”. I’ve felt challenged by not just friends in the industry but even more outside of it to talk more about what inspires me. Inspiration is very personal. Something that moves my thoughts might be meaningless to you. And that’s ok. This is for me. But I’m glad to share a little piece of me with you. There’s no schedule or plan for these postings. Just whenever I feel a need to pass something along!

And here it is: my first shared inspiration. And it happens to be a music video:) It’s funny because I don’t watch MV’s ever. But I loved this song and in trying to understand the lyrics, I searched the video. The story is told beautifully but that’s not what caught my eye. It’s the use of light. Not a typical sweet light most of us plan our shoots around but that 10 am dusty morning light illuminating your home. Gorgeous. And simple.

Stay tuned – there’s a very special shoot to be shared in response to this.

He had to know it was coming. She kept holding the cone so close to his face.

What’s not shown here is a lovely shot of Eric mooning the camera. He’s crazy and doesn’t hold back… and I love it. Anna handles it’s beautifully. Usually a roll of the eyes. Half smile. Or FULL on laugh. Makes me that much more excited to shoot their wedding this summer:)

LOVIN the fans!

Just for fun

February 14, 2010

Sometimes…and i mean SOMETIMES…i’m not working on edits and shoots for all of you lovely friends:) From time-to-time, I’ll do little projects with or without Matt. Improvements to the halfway house (which is the apartment we currently call home until our next 4 moves within the next 12 months), painting, construction, little side jobs for friends, etc.

I thought I’d share this one. My good friend from college, Robyn, is marrying Rob (i know…giggle…it’s cute) in May and they have solicited the help of willing friends. I was ready and willing – and my task: programs! Nice and easy, I thought. I have immense appreciation for the work that my friends Marit and Carrie do. Let me tell you.

So back to the struggle. Here was my process:

1 – fonts. Sure, i’ll pick one of the 144 million fonts in existence. Easy, right? No. 500 hours later, I had to just pick from the 22,000 i narrowed it down to.

2 – colors. A little easier since I knew Robyn’s colors. But then it requires restraint to not throw in bright vibrant colors like turquoise and cherry red and Lime green. I sat on my hands until the urge has passed and then continued.

3 – art. She wanted wildflowers. And so that began the quest for PRETTY wildflowers. Carrie came to the rescue. (thanks a million carrie).

4 – size. Is there ever a right size for programs? I’m going to guess there is a recommended size. I didn’t know that size.

I did this for my good friend because I love her and I was so excited to help! And, I survived. You likey? I actually think it turned out cute!

However, my advice to the world: let the pros handle it ;)

These two are kicking off my wild wedding schedule beginning May 1. Excited to share with you.
